The ‘Härebierg’ Military Centre – Grand-Duc Jean Barracks, Diekirch
Härebierg (in Luxembourgish) — or Herrenberg in German — is a hill in the municipality of Diekirch, in north-eastern Luxembourg, rising to an altitude of 394 metres. It is on this site that the headquarters of the Luxembourgish army, the Military Centre, is located within the ‘Grand-Duc Jean Barracks’.

The barracks were established on this hilltop in 1955. The site takes advantage of a commanding position in the landscape, characterised by a south-facing slope and buildings arranged mainly to follow the contours of the land.

Most of the 34 existing buildings were thus constructed in the 1950s. Today, the site is undergoing a major modernisation programme: this refurbishment programme aims to address the growing number of challenges facing the Luxembourgish Armed Forces in the context of implementing national and international defence policies.

This programme covers a total gross floor area of approximately 83,000 m², comprising around 16,500 m² of new construction and 66,500 m² of refurbished buildings. The energy-efficient refurbishment of the buildings will reduce heating consumption by an average of around 50%.
